The CATAN BIG BOX includes the base game, the 5-6 player expansion, the Among Friends expansion, and the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus mini-expansions.
In CATAN (formerly Settlers of Catan), players attempt to become the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. Each turn, dice are rolled to determine which resources the island produces. Players build structures by “spending” resources (sheep, wheat, wood, bricks, and ore), represented by the corresponding resource cards; each type of land, except for the unproductive desert, produces a specific resource: hills produce bricks, forests produce wood, mountains produce ore, fields produce wheat, and pastures produce sheep.
Game setup consists of randomly placing large hexagonal tiles (each representing one of the five resource-producing terrain types—or the desert) in a beehive shape and surrounding them with water tiles, some of which contain trading ports. A numbered disc, whose value corresponds to the result of two six-sided dice, is placed on each piece of land. Each player receives two settlements (houses) and roads (sticks) that are positioned at the intersections and edges of the land pieces. Players collect a set of resource cards based on the land adjacent to the last settlement built. A robber pawn is placed on the desert land.
A round consists of rolling the dice, collecting resource cards based on the result and the position of settlements (or improved cities—such as hotels), exchanging resource cards (if possible and desired) for improvements, trading cards at a port, possibly playing a development card, or exchanging resource cards with other players. If the dice result is 7, the active player moves the robber to a new piece of land and steals a resource card from another player who has a settlement adjacent to that piece of land.
Points are accumulated by building settlements and cities, having the longest road or the largest army (obtained with some development cards), and collecting certain development cards that simply grant victory points. When a player accumulates 10 points (some of which can be kept secret), they announce this and claim victory.
